The Adams Mark hotel chain recently agreed to pay $8 million in settlement of racial bias lawsuits which charged that the hotels discriminated against Black guests.

The agreements, filed in federal court in Orlando, FL, resolve a class-action suit and suits filed by the U.S.

Justice Department and the state of Florida.

It was the largest and prehensive settlement ever of a racial bias case involving hotels.

The hotel chain did not admit any wrongdoing but agreed to give $4.4 million which will be shared by 1, 200 guests at a Black College Reunion weekend last year who said they were treated unfairly at the hotel in Daytona Beach, FL.

The hotel will also give $1.5 million for Florida to distribute to Florida A&M University, Bethune-Cookman College, Edward Waters College and Florida Memorial College for scholarships and internships in hotel management.

The chain will also bring in a group to train its employees in non-discrimination and monitor pliance.

Earlier this year, five Black vacationers brought a class-action suit against the chain over the treatment of Black guests at the Black College Reunion weekend last year.

They alleged the Adams Mark Hotel in Daytona Beach, FL, singled them out as security risks and made them wear bright orange wristbands to get into the hotel JET, June 7, 1999.

Black reunion guests also were charged more than other special event guests, had to pay cash in full upon reserving rooms, were not allowed to use telephones, minibars or movies in their rooms without first paying a large cash deposit, and were required to pay cash for room service and at hotel restaurants and bars, according to the allegations.

In December, the Justice Department alleged the chain of 21 large, full-service hotels in 13 states charged Black customers higher prices than Whites and segregated them in less desirable rooms as part of a corporate pattern of discrimination.

NAACP President Kweisi Mfume stated after the settlement with this agreement, the call for economic sanctions against the hotel chain has been suspended.

NAACP urged people to boycott the hotel and also assisted in filing the private lawsuit against Adams Mark.

Fred Kummer, president and CEO of Adams Mark Hotels & Resorts headquartered in St.

Louis, said in a press statement: Adams Mark is looking forward to moving ahead and making a pany better, now that this lawsuit is behind us.

While Adams Mark mitted to equality and has never intentionally done anything wrong, we apologize for any actions that may have made any of our guests feel fortable or e.
